Study abroad in Quito Ecuador and obtain Academic Credit during Summer 2012

When:Summer I – May 20th to June 19th 2012
Credits:Earn 6 academic credits for Span: 101, 102, 201 or 202
What: This is a 30-day program that offers students the unique opportunity to bridge theory and practice by improving their Spanish language skills while learning about Ecuadorian and Latin American culture in context. Students live with an Ecuadorian family in the city of Quito, take Spanish classes, and travel around Ecuador.
Who: No previous language study required. Students of any academic major are welcome.

The program includes:

  • - 6 credits through Clemson University
  • - Tuition and fees(even non residenst of S.C.)
  • - Spanish classes in Ecuador with native profesors (4 hrs./ 5 days a week)
  • - Class material
  • - Room and board, 3 meals a day, 7 days a week
  • - Cultural tours (visit to museums, cultural centers, folk ballet, among others)
  • - Weekend trips (hotel, meals, on-site activities, transportation and entry fees)
  • - Health insurance
  • - Onsite program director
  • - Airport transfers
  • - Orientation
  • - Welcome and farewell dinner

Total program cost $3,700 USD (approximate) Does not include airfare or personal expenses.

Students from other Universities 

Students from other universities can study abroad in Quito with Clemson University and earn Spanish credit. The program and cost is the same as for Clemson students.
What to do: You need to complete the study abroad application and submit it to the Study Abroad Office. Then, complete an application at the registrar’s office as a special student (there is a note and link to the website on the cover instructions of our application). Once the registrar admits you as a “transient” or “summer student” they will issued a Clemson University ID and you can be registered for the courses and pay tuition. You are then treated as one of our own.

Washington Sate University WA

When: Early Fall Quarter at the UW – August 22 – September 16, 2012.

Courses: Courses on conversational Spanish. Students will receive 34 hours of conversation in the Spanish language (two daily hours of conversational Spanish (Monday-Friday: weeks I and II; Monday-Wednesday: week III; and Monday -Thursday: week IV), which will give them an opportunity to practice the grammar and lexicon learned in their UW courses. These sessions will also include grammar review. Students will also participate in one hour of workshops in dance or pottery, to be chosen by student (same schedule as conversation classes), and attend a weekly lecture on Ecuador: The Meeting of Cultures.

Credits:  Students will earn 5 UW credits in SPAN 199 or 299.

Excursions & Other Activities

Students will participate in a weekly guided visit to sites of cultural and historical interest in Quito. They will also go on two 1-day excursions to Otavalo and Mitad del Mundo, and one 4-day excursion to Baños, Riobamba, the Devil’s Nose, and Ingapirca, the most important Inca archeological site in Ecuador.

Housing Information

Housing and board (three meals a day) for students will be arranged with families in Quito. Houses are typically located in areas for easy access to school and city amenities.

 ELIGIBILITY & APPLICATION

Program objective is primarily to offer an opportunity to summer students of Spanish to practice their language skills in a total linguistic and cultural immersion environment. However, all UW students are eligible and welcome to apply. Minimum requirement is completion of SPAN 102 or equivalent by the beginning of program. Non-UW students can also participate in this program by submitting a Non-matriculated Student Application and by paying a $250 fee due by April 1, 2012.

The deadline to submit applications is April 1, 2012.  Applications will be considered on a first come and on a space available basis so students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION

 Cost

Total program fees: $2,000.  All fees will be charged to the student’s account and should be paid at Student Fiscal Services on the following schedule:

$350 non-refundable deposit charged upon receipt of contract

$250 non-refundable IPE fee

%1,650 program fee balance

Program fees include instructional costs, room and board (three daily meals), guided visits in Quito, excursions, class materials, and Internet access.  Fees do not include airfare, personal spending money, International Student ID card, or $250 IPE fee

 Financial Aid

Most forms of financial aid can be utilized during participation in the program. Participants who are on financial aid should contact the Financial Aid Office to verify that their awards may apply. For more information go to IP&E’s Financial Aid webpage.

Refund Schedule

The $350 program deposit and $250 IPE Fee are non-refundable. Students withdrawing from a program will be liable for a percentage of the program fee depending on the date of withdrawal. More details about the withdrawal policy will be included in your payment contract. No part of the program fee is refundable once the program has begun. The date of withdrawal is considered the date (business day) a withdrawal form is received by the Study Abroad Office. Notice of withdrawal from the program must be made in writing to Program Director and the IPE office.
